Photographing Floodlit Buildings at Night

One thing I love about this time of year when winter ends and spring begins is the clear albeit cold evenings.

Many people advise you to try and take photograph of this sort at dusk with a little light at the back, however, I prefer the different mood it brings with the dark sky at the back, whatever your preference try both to see what effect it makes and make your own mind up.

On a short walk in Portsmouth I took my camera and it is amazing what you can achieve or even find in the most unlikely of places or even time.

I tried different settings in achieving this shot of Portsmouth Guildhall and with vey different results, when taking photographs of floodlit buildings I would suggest starting your settings at:

  • Exposure Mode – Aperture Priority
  • Aperture – f/2.2
  • Shutter Speed – 1/17
  • ISO – 400

As a tip take a few shots each with slightly different settings and you will be amazed as to how different each would be.
